"Wax" isn't one material — it's a category that spans natural, synthetic, and petroleum-derived products, each with different melting points, textures, and best-fit uses. Choosing the wrong one for your application can mean a candle that tunnels, a cosmetic balm that never sets, or a coating that cracks in transit.

This guide breaks down the major wax types used across candles, cosmetics, and industrial applications — what each one is, where it's typically used, and what to check for when sourcing it. 1. Beeswax (Yellow and White)

Beeswax is a natural wax produced by honeybees, and it comes in two main forms:

  • Yellow Beeswax — filtered but otherwise unprocessed, retaining its natural golden color, faint honey scent, and trace pollen/propolis. Preferred for candles and cosmetics where a natural aroma and color are wanted.
  • White Beeswax — yellow beeswax that's been bleached or heavily filtered to remove color and scent, giving a neutral base for cosmetics and applications that need consistency across batches.
  • Super Refined Pure Beeswax — an even more heavily processed grade, refined to a higher standard of clarity and consistency than standard white beeswax, typically used where formulators need the most neutral, predictable base available (pharmaceutical-grade cosmetics, specialty coatings).

Beeswax has one of the highest melting points of any natural wax (roughly 144–147°F / 62–64°C), which is why it burns slowly and holds its shape well in warmer conditions — a real advantage for candles shipped or stored without climate control.

2. Paraffin Wax

A petroleum byproduct, paraffin is the most widely used candle wax globally due to its low cost, easy dye/fragrance uptake, and consistent, glass-clear finish. It has a lower melting point than beeswax, which makes it easier to work with but also means candles burn faster.

Paraffin gets criticized for indoor air quality concerns, though regulatory reviews (like those from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission) generally find typical VOC emissions from candle-grade paraffin to be within safe limits — the bigger factors are ventilation, fragrance load, and wick quality rather than the wax itself.

Best for: Mass-market candles, votives, and applications needing strong color/fragrance payoff at low cost.


3. Soy Wax (Soya Wax)

Made from hydrogenated soybean oil, soy wax is a popular "natural" alternative to paraffin. It burns cooler and slower than paraffin, holds fragrance oils exceptionally well, and is biodegradable. Its lower melting point makes it easy to work with for container candles, though it can be more prone to frosting (a natural crystalline surface texture, similar to beeswax bloom).

Best for: Strongly scented container candles, especially in the natural/clean-label market segment.


4. Coconut Wax

A newer entrant, coconut wax is pressed from coconut meat and prized for its clean, even burn and excellent fragrance throw. It's often blended with soy or beeswax (rather than used alone) because pure coconut wax is soft and can be expensive at scale. Blends like coconut-soy or coconut-beeswax combine the best burn and scent qualities of each.

Best for: Premium, natural-positioned candle lines; blended with other waxes to manage cost and firmness.


5. Gel Wax

Not a true wax but a mixture of mineral oil and polymer resin, gel wax is transparent and used for decorative, embed-style candles (think suspended shells, flowers, or beads visible inside the candle). It has a distinct look and requires different wicking than solid waxes.

Best for: Decorative and novelty candles where visual effect matters more than burn efficiency.


6. Carnauba Wax

Harvested from the leaves of the carnauba palm, this is one of the hardest natural waxes available, with a very high melting point (around 180–187°F / 82–86°C). It's rarely used alone in candles — instead, small amounts are blended into other waxes (including paraffin and soy) to raise the melting point, improve opacity, and add shine. It's also widely used outside candles, in cosmetics, food coatings, and polishes.

Best for: Hardening additive in candle blends; cosmetics, food glazing, and polish formulations.


7. Microcrystalline Wax

A refined petroleum product like paraffin, but with a finer, more flexible crystal structure. It's stickier and more elastic than standard paraffin, making it useful as a binding or texturizing additive rather than a standalone candle wax. Common uses include adhesives, cosmetics (lip balms, creams), and as an additive to improve paraffin candle texture and adhesion to containers.

Best for: Additive use in cosmetics and industrial applications; rarely sold as a standalone candle wax.


8. Petroleum Jelly

Technically a semi-solid mixture of mineral oils and waxes rather than a wax itself, petroleum jelly (petrolatum) is included here because it shares sourcing and refining infrastructure with paraffin and microcrystalline wax. It's used primarily in skincare, pharmaceuticals, and as a moisture barrier — not in candle making.
