How to Make Soy Wax Pillar Candles – Tips and Tricks

Pillar candles have a timeless appeal. Freestanding, sculptural, and elegant, they work as centrepieces, altar decorations, and luxury home accents. But making pillar candles from soy wax — rather than the traditional paraffin — comes with its own set of challenges and rewards. Soy wax is softer, more forgiving in containers, but requires specific techniques when used in pillar form. Done right, the result is a beautiful, clean-burning candle with excellent scent throw and a natural, matte finish that looks unmistakably handcrafted.

This guide covers everything — the right wax blend, mould selection, pouring temperatures, fragrance loading, and the most common mistakes to avoid.

Why Use Soy Wax for Pillar Candles?

Soy wax is typically associated with container candles because of its soft consistency at room temperature. Pure soy wax (100% soy) is generally too soft to hold the shape of a freestanding pillar without a container for support. This is why most soy pillar candles use a soy pillar blend or a soy-paraffin blend that increases hardness while retaining the clean-burning and natural benefits of soy.

Benefits of soy pillar blends:

  • Clean, low-soot burn

  • Excellent hot and cold scent throw

  • Natural, matte, slightly rustic finish

  • Biodegradable and sustainable

  • Marketable as a natural product

What You Need

Materials:

  • Soy pillar wax blend (or 80% soy + 20% paraffin for hardness)

  • Pillar candle moulds (aluminium, polycarbonate, or silicone)

  • Pre-tabbed cotton wicks — sized for your mould diameter

  • Fragrance oil (max 6–8% for pillar blends)

  • Candle dye (optional)

  • Mould release spray or light vegetable oil

  • Wick bar or pencil to hold wick centred

  • Double boiler or melting pitcher

  • Thermometer

  • Poking tool (skewer or chopstick)

Step-by-Step: Making Soy Wax Pillar Candles

Step 1 – Prepare Your Mould

Lightly spray the inside of your mould with mould release or wipe with a thin layer of vegetable oil. This is essential — without it, your candle will be nearly impossible to remove cleanly.

Thread your pre-tabbed wick through the wick hole at the base of the mould (the base becomes the top of the finished candle). Seal the wick hole with mould sealer putty to prevent leakage. Pull the wick taut and secure it across the top of the mould using a wick bar or pencil.

Step 2 – Melt the Wax

Using a double boiler, melt your soy pillar wax to around 82–88°C. Stir occasionally to ensure even melting. Avoid microwaving wax — it heats unevenly and creates hot spots.

If using dye, add dye chips or liquid dye now and stir until fully dissolved.

Step 3 – Add Fragrance Oil

Remove the wax from heat and allow it to cool to 75–78°C before adding fragrance oil. Adding fragrance too hot causes it to flash off and evaporate before the candle sets, resulting in poor scent throw. Stir slowly and steadily for two full minutes.

Step 4 – Pour

Pour the wax slowly into your prepared mould, leaving about 1.5cm of space at the top. Pour slowly to minimise air bubbles. Tap the mould gently on the work surface to release any trapped air.

Allow the candle to cool at room temperature. Do not move it or place it in the refrigerator — rapid cooling causes cracking and sinkholes.

Step 5 – Relief Pour

As soy wax cools, it contracts and creates a sinkhole around the wick. After 2–4 hours, use a skewer to poke several relief holes around the wick, going about three-quarters of the depth of the candle. Reheat a small amount of your reserved wax to the same pouring temperature and fill in the sinkhole with a second pour. Keep this second pour slightly below the original surface level.

Step 6 – Demould

Allow the candle to fully cure for at least 24–48 hours at room temperature before attempting to demould. Gently remove the mould sealer, invert the mould, and tap gently. The candle should slide out cleanly if the mould was properly released.

Trim the wick to 6mm before lighting.

Tips & Tricks for Perfect Soy Pillar Candles

Use a soy-paraffin blend. A blend of 80% soy and 20% paraffin significantly improves hardness and reduces frosting without sacrificing the natural burn quality of soy.

Keep fragrance load at 6–8%. Pillar candles cannot hold as much fragrance oil as container candles because excess oil weakens the wax structure and causes seeping. Stick to the lower end of the fragrance load for structural integrity.

Cure for at least one week. Soy wax candles — especially pillars — benefit enormously from a longer cure time. The fragrance binds more fully to the wax, and the structure firms up, giving you a cleaner burn and better scent throw.

Avoid high-moisture environments during setting. Humidity causes frosting and white bloom on soy wax surfaces. If you live in a humid climate, set your candles in an air-conditioned room.

Test your wick thoroughly. Pillar candles require a wick that creates a full melt pool reaching the edges without tunnelling or creating an overly large flame. Always test burn for multiple sessions before going into production.

Smooth the base. After demoulding, the base of your pillar may be slightly uneven. Gently warm a flat pan or glass on low heat and press the base of the candle against it for a few seconds to create a flat, even bottom.

Common Problems and How to Fix Them

Cracking: Caused by cooling too fast. Always cool at room temperature and avoid drafts.

Frosting: A natural characteristic of soy wax. Minimised by pouring at a slightly lower temperature and using a soy-paraffin blend.

Sinkholes: Normal with soy wax — always do a relief pour.

Candle won't release from mould: Insufficient mould release. Place the mould in the freezer for 10–15 minutes — this contracts the wax and usually allows clean release.

Poor scent throw: Fragrance added too hot, or insufficient cure time. Always add fragrance below 78°C and cure for at least a week.
